Cinematic Trailer for ‘Sonic Runners’ Released

The first trailer for Sega’s upcoming Sonic Runners game, which was originally announced back in December. Before you get too excited, it’s only fair to warn you that the trailer shows us pretty much nothing, except some flashy imagery and a brief look at Sonic’s history. Fortunately, there is also a long interview with the creator of the game, where he sheds a bit more light on what the Gameplay entails. First, let’s take a look at the trailer:

Like I said, it really doesn’t tell anything more that you didn’t already know, and that was only that the game would be called Sonic Runners. The interview I mentioned is available over at famitsu, but the entire thing is in Japanese — you can use Google Translate to try reading in English, but that isn’t always the most reliable. However, most of the key details have already been spreading around the internet, so we’ll go over the main ones real quick.

First of all, Sonic Runners is going to be a 2D side-scrolling auto runner game with different stages which will be called “episodes”. Each episode will be roughly 1-2 minutes and length, and there will be 50 episodes available when the game is launched — however, there will most likely be more episodes added as updates in the future. The episodes will also have multiple secret areas/hidden paths to uncover.

The interview also confirmed that you would be able to play as multiple characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and many others from the Sonic universe. Eggman and other familiar bad guys will show up as well, and there will be plenty of references to previous Sonic games. You’ll also be able to collect various companions that support you while you’re running. The game will have leaderboards and special scheduled events throughout the year.

We know that the game is going to be free to download, so obviously that means IAPs, although we don’t know how punishing they will be in the live version. Another thing we don’t know is when we’ll even be able to play this game in the NA region. It is currently scheduled for a Spring 2015 release in Japan, but nothing specific for NA. I’d hope to see in not too much longer after the Japan release, and would be surprised if it got pushed out very far.

We’ll keep you posted with more details about the release, so keep checking back regularly to Pocketmeta!
