How To: Get Unlimited HotSpot on your Android with T-Mobile

One of the most popular plans with T-Mobile right now offers unlimited data, with 5GB of mobile hotspot. Although 5GB is nice, unlimited is a lot better, and gives you way more freedom when browsing over your mobile connection. Here’s what you’ll need in order to unlock your unlimited hostpot:

  • Unlimited mobile data plan (this method uses your regular data instead of hotspot)
  • Rooted android device
  • WiFi Tether Router app ($2.80)
  • Length: ~5 minutes

Note: This was tested on a rooted Galaxy Note 4 running Android 4.4.4 on T-Mobile. I can’t guarantee it will work on other devices or carriers, but it should at least work on any 4.4.4 Android on T-Mobile’s network.

Step 1. You’ll need to purchase the WiFi Tether Router application from the Google Play Store (link above). This app is just under $3, and is crucial to getting your unlimited hotspot. I’m sure there are others that get the job done, but this is the one that worked for me. If you’ve got a free one that works as well, feel free to share it in the comment section at the bottom. Once the application is installed, go ahead and open it up.

Step 2. If you are running 4.3 or 4.4, you’ll be prompted with a message telling you to un-check a setting — ignore this message. It will bring you to the settings page, but simply press back.

Step 3. Scroll down the list of menus and find “APN Settings”, a couple spaces above the Support & Questions section. Open it, and there should be a single T-Mobile US LTE APN. Open this, and write down the information — you can ignore anything that says “Not set” or “None”. The only information you’ll likely need is the following: Name, APN, MMSC, and APN type. Make sure you write down everything exactly the way it is on the settings.

Step 4. Go back and click the + icon to create a new APN. Fill in all of the information you took down from the previous APN. When you get to APN protocol and APN roaming protocol, make sure they are both set to IPv4. On the original APN, the APN protocol is set to IPv6, so this is the one difference.

Step 5. Go back to the app’s menus, scroll to the top, and tap “Network Name SSID” to set a custom network name. Then open “WiFI Password” to set a custom password.

Step 6. Enable the Wi-Fi on your phone as you would normally. If the Wi-Fi is off, the hotspot won’t be visible.

Step 7. Go to the main screen of the Wifi Tether Router app, and tap “Enable WiFi Router”. After a few seconds, the SSID and Password should appear, and the network should now be visible on any nearby device. Simply connect with the credentials you set, and you’ll be browsing on your hotspot with unlimited data.
