well, it's more complicated than that, especially if you are not in the US. Android Market does not work with all countries or works very "limited". As for the apps themselves, I don't know if Android will reach the level of iPhone's apps anytime soon. There are tons of devs working for the iPhone, while Android is a little young at heart...

let's just say I had the HTC Sense...now I have an iPhone 3GS? Main reasons: no fun factor, few apps and the Android sucks battery like crazy

With the launch of iPhone 4, every Android powered device I know was rendered obsolete...fact!

I love my droid! It does every thing I ever wanted my phone to do before but couldn't. I'm not a big gamer, so I can't tell you much about that. The most awesome feature that totally blows away iphone would be the ability to multi-task. Plus, I'm not into digital rights management. I just like to plug my phone in, drop some files on it and go. The whole itunes thing really irks me. I'm not sure if the iphone supports this, but I with droid, I have added all of my email accounts. Syncs great with gmail, contacts, phone numbers, addresses...

    Apps I love:

Easy Tether: Allows me to tether my phone and use it for a wireless connection. Works awesome. I got the paid app so I can use it to log into https sites like gmail, etc., but there is a free just http version as well.

    Hootsuite: For the twitter addicts.

Facebook app: Works awesome, syncs fb avatars with contacts.

Maps: Phenomenal and free, great for directions. Does the voice thingie that tells you where to turn next, etc...

Google Skymap: Super fun stargazing kind of app, shows you the constellations.

Astro File manager: Allows u to browse your files and *i think* is what opens some docs, I can't remember off hand. I have a bunch of pdfs on the hd and use astro to browse them and open up to read.

Dolphin Browser: Allows tabbed internet browsing in addition to pinch n' zoom capabilities

Advanced Task Killer: (there's another one but i like this one because it puts the cutest little droid icon in my notifications area at the top, lol) Allows to kill processes if you feel you have too many running. I haven't felt the need to use it very much though, mainly if I want the battery to last extra long.

LastFM: I use it to stream music. Allows one to play full songs, browse radio stations, etc. There are other ones too, I just happened to have a lastfm account and haven't made the time to check out the other services like pandora, etc...

Droid Light: Turns your camera light into a flashlight. Awesome for finding your keys, etc...

Youtube: Browse youtube with one click. Awesome. My son and I watched the entire Pirates of Silicon Valley on a car trip a couple of weeks ago, lol!

Gtasks: Syncs with your gmail tasks list.

There are so many more apps. Lots and lots for free!
