How do i do a hard restore on a iPad?

How do i do a hard restore on a iPad?
- Only reaches Apple logo screen.
- Tried Holding lock and home button to soft reset it.
- Tried holding home for 3 secs, then lock and home for 10 secs ect. until iTunes recognizes it. (it makes me download 4.2.1 software which is on the iPad but it keeps stopping the download and starting again)

This is my mates iPad and it has never been synced on my pc or updated on any pc because it is new. I downloaded the 4.2.1 online but i don't know if i can import this into iTunes and use that instead of waiting 40 mins then the download stops so i have to wait another 40 mins.
This happened after i jailbroke it then turned it off then it didn't turn on again.

I found that the way to rectify it is a two step process, both of which you've included in your list. For me, if I remove my iPad backups and then a hard reset, my next few syncs will backup correctly. While testing, I had just move the specific backups to my desktop until I was sure the new backup worked properly.
