Everything evolves, including viruses and the way you are getting them. Your computer can have lots of malware , trojans etc. with you having no clue about it. A good anti-virus program could solve your problem, but even so, you can't be sure your pc is clean, at least not yet. That's why, we will go through a few steps to help you ensure your computer's safety.
1. Anti-Virus
There are many anti-viruses on the market, some are free while for others you need to get a license. From my personal experience and knowledge , i would not recommend a free anti-virus. The reason is simple - a free anti-virus is not as good as commercial ones and it will not protect you completely.
Here are some good anti-virus products : Kaspersky , BitDefender or AVG. You can get a 30 days trial to test them. A weekly full scan is recommended.
2. Anti-spyware and adware
Spybot - Search & Destroy - a great, easy-to-use and free tool for protection against adware, spyware, dialers, keyloggers, Trojans and usage tracks. It can work in conjunction with your anti-virus.
3. For Windows 7 users, it is highly recommended to turn on Windows Defender. It helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. It also features real-time protection.
Finally, some tips to avoid getting viruses :
- Scan with the anti-virus program any files that may contain executable code ( this includes packaged software that you buy from the store as well as any program you might download from the internet )
- Be careful about what files you are accepting over internet ( via mail, yahoo, etc. )
- Be careful what links you are visiting while browsing the internet; there are many sites that will try to get a virus in your computer. Your anti-virus should notify you though.
