A couple of staple mechanics in the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre, are the somewhat longer match times, and the minions, creeps, or whatever you want to call them. Call of Champions is an upcoming MOBA that has decided to do away with those mechanics, and will be introducing a 5-minute game with no minions. Instead, there will be a unique “Orb” mechanic, which helps sway the tower pushing ability between the two teams. According to the developer (Spacetime Studios), this is to create more of a “tug of war” style match, as opposed to something where one team can really dominate.
In addition to having no minions, there will also be no item shops or jungle type area in the game, which really make the 5-minute games possible. You’ll still be able to build your character a certain way, but it will be more along the lines of what you see in Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm, where you simply choose different talents or abilities as you level up. Spacetime Studios has said that there will be a heavy emphasis on social features in the game as well, which is a great idea given how the community plays such a huge factor in the success of a MOBA.
The game will have five different classes, so each character will fall under a certain class, such as tank, fighter, mage, etc. Call of Champions will be free to download with some micro-transactions, but the developer is adamant that these will not be pay-to-win IAPs, but rather something to help speed up the “advancement curve” — which to me sounds like an EXP boost for your account level, or something along those lines.
It’s definitely a game to keep an eye on if you’re a fan of the MOBA genre, and especially if you’re looking for something that’s a little more fast paced for your mobile device.
