ASCII art has long been a part of computers but creating it is very time-consuming and that deters a lot of people from trying it. With ASCII Generator dotNET everyone can create their first pieces of ASCII art in seconds.
Installation & Requirements
The program requires no installation. Simply download and extract the files to a folder of your choice and run the executable file. You will also need to have Microsoft’s .NET Framework 2.0 installed which can be installed through 3.5 but not via 4.0. The supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
The program is extremely simple to use. The interface is very clean with all the options located in the top toolbars. You can also right click anywhere in the application for the context menu to appear. To insert an image to the application, either double click on the respective box in the bottom right corner or drag and drop an image file inside it. The application will then automatically generate the ASCII art counterpart of the image you entered and you can edit it to suit your needs.
Keep in mind that the larger the input image, the larger the ASCII image will be as well. You might need to resize the window or even enter the full screen mode by hitting the F11 key or by clicking on the monitor icon of the toolbar. Although the art is generated automatically, you can edit a lot of its parts. First of all, you can determine which characters are used for the creation of the image via the Characters tab in the top. The more characters an image has the more diverse it can be. So if you only enter a few characters the output image might not be of high quality.
Furthermore, the box in the bottom left lets you directly edit the way the art is displayed. You can increase or decrease the density of the characters, the brightness and contrast of the image and adjust the dithering amount in the image. Finally, by right clicking on the image you can edit the sharpening levels and change the font. The last option will vastly change the way the image is displayed as you can change the size and structure of the characters.
There are multiple ways to save the images. You can choose black and white, colour, text and image formats. There is also a colour preview window that you can use to check out how the output image will look like. Finally, choosing between text or image format depends on how you want to use it.
-No installation required, small file size
-Extremely simple to use as the images are created automatically
-A lot of options to play around with
-None that would be worth mentioning
ASCII Generator dotNET is a very fun application that anyone remotely interested in ASCII art should definitely try. The easiness of the program combined with the utility it offers are simply fantastic.
