[How To] Convert your app icons to Material Design on Android

Material Design has done (and still doing) Android a favor, allowing developers to provide a visually unified experience to users. Sadly, some apps are slow to adopt Google’s Material Design guidelines, but with many of them being highly useful users are not prepared to let them go just for slightly outdated icons and interface.

An awesome free app called Materialize comes to rescue, and lets you convert your app icons to Material design in a simple manner so at the very least your home screen will have a consistent look and feel that seamlessly blends with the rest of the operating system.

With Materialize, you can quickly convert your app icons to Material Design on Android 5.0 and newer. Your custom icons can be added to your stock home screen or even used as an icon pack with a custom launcher.

Here’s how you can use Materialize to convert your app icons to Material Design with just a few taps.

To begin with, you will need to install Materialize and you can do that by visiting the link below, or by searching for the app’s name in the Play Store.

After you open the app, it will display most of your installed apps except Google apps which are already using Material Design and pre-installed system apps which should also be using Material Design.

Nevertheless, if some of them aren’t you can tap on the menu button in the upper-right corner of the screen then select ‘Show system apps’. Now the system apps will also be displayed in the list and you can select the app for which you’d like to theme the icon and Materialize will automatically  create a square Material Design icon.

Alternatively, you can use the ‘Add to Home’ option and the app will directly generate and apply the new Material Design icon on your home screen.

The same menu offers several theming options that let you further customize the icon. You can choose one of the available shapes, tweak the icon’s padding and even let the app ‘Auto Fill’ any blank areas on the icon using its primary color or white.

After you finish customizing the icon you have two ways to apply it on your home screen. to begin with, you can tap on the three-dot button located at the bottom of the screen to open an options menu and select ‘Export to gallery’. This will save the icon as an image which can be used with almost any custom launcher.

The other method is to simply tap on the ‘Add to home’ option which will directly add the new icon to your home screen.
