[Quick Tip] Customize ‘Respond with Text’ to calls on iPhone

iOS offers a set of predefined text messages you can use to quickly reply to calls when you’re unable to talk. They cover some of the most frequent situations, but they do feel a bit cold and impersonal.

You can easily change their text to whatever you want as to feel you’re actually the person sending the messages. In iOS these preset text messages are grouped under the ‘Respond with Text’ option, not the most descriptive choice of words but I guess it’s not the only feature in the ecosystem with a poor naming decision. Even so, customizing your ‘Respond with Text’ messages is a quick and super easy task, so here’s how to do it.

iOS Settings - Phone

Open your phone’s Settings and then tap on Phone.

iOS Settings - Respond with Text

On the following screen go to the Calls section and select ‘Respond with Text’.

Now you can see the preset options and change the text as you like. Once you’re happy with the reply you can return to your home screen.

Be aware there are only three slots for the predefined text responses and while you can edit existing ones you can’t add more.

Your personalized responses will be shown in darkened text, while the ones you left untouched will appear in a lighter, gray shade. Should you change your mind and want to get back to the default reply you can simply press the “x” button next to your custom text.
