CyberLink PowerDirector: Multimedia editing powerhouse

CyberLink PowerDirector is arguably one of the most complete multimedia editing tools available in the market, with a ton of features in a single working environment.

Installation & Requirements

Due to the large file size, the application will probably take quite a bit of time to install. You will also need an active internet connection so that the installer can download anything that’s missing and perform any necessary updates. Furthermore, it will also attempt to install QuickTime Player, a component required to play some of the supported files and a simple extra utility for those that want it. The supported operating systems are Windows XP (with SP3 needed for advanced functions), Vista, 7 and 8. For more demanding editing features, a new and powerful PC is recommended.

Interface

When you first start the application you will be asked whether you want to participate in the improvement program by sending the company anonymous data. You will also be asked to register the product or continue using it. After you set those two they will never appear again. However, each time you start the application you will also be asked about the mode you want to run it in, namely Full Feature or Easy Editor and Slideshow Creator.

The first mode is the actual interface will all of the toolbars and options available for editing. The second one is the Magic Movie Wizard, a step-by-step movie creator with simple options for the less advanced users and those with no time. The last one is the same, except it is aimed at creating sideshows instead of movies. The wizards are extremely simple to use and you only need to follow the on-screen instructions of importing the multimedia files and applying a few basic options.

The full editor’s interface is truly remarkable. Through the whole application, the visual design is superb with clean lines and a sleek dark design that is easy on the eyes. The care that the designers have put into the interface, however, is most obvious on the main editor as everything is neatly categorized and accessible. The left toolbar gives access to all of the options for the movie like adding media, adding special effects and different transitions within the movie. When you click on any list, its items appear right on the next window.

In the bottom of the interface you can see detailed information about the progress of the movie and clicking on any item inside the timeline gives you options based on what it is. For example, clicking on a picture will let you edit it, crop it, enhance it and whatever else you can think of. The changes are made in real time and you can preview them in the Preview window. You can also create content from your webcam and microphone using the Capture tab. Finally, when you are done adding multimedia files, clicking on the Produce tab or the Create Disc one will take you through the final process where you will be able to choose formats, resolutions and more.
