The photos, videos and other types of attachments you send via the iOS Messages app on your iPhone or iPad will remain stored there, even if you already have them in the Photos app (or another location on your device).
Since there are always better uses for storage space than keeping duplicates, it makes sense you’d want to get rid of those Messages attachments. As if that weren’t enough, they can also make it very difficult to scroll through a conversation.
There’s a simple way to get rid of photos, videos, audio files from a message thread without deleting the whole conversation. In other words, the text is retained and all that’s removed are the attachments. Follow the steps below to get it done.
How to delete individual or multiple photos and videos in the Messages app on iOS
In the Messages app, open the conversation thread from which you want to delete photos or videos.
Tap on ‘Details‘ in the upper-right corner of the screen. Scroll down to the Attachments section.
Now simply tap and hold on a photo or video and a pop-up menu will appear providing Copy, Delete and More options. Tap on the ‘More‘ option.
Then you can select the items you want to delete (you can obviously select only one if you want to remove a specific image or video). When you’re happy with your selection, tap on the trash can icon to delete the photos. You’ll be asked to confirm your decision, so tap on the ‘Delete…Attachments‘ option to remove them, or ‘Cancel‘ if you changed your mind.
Now that you’ve learned this cool trick, you can do a bit of spring cleaning in your message threads and free up some much-needed storage space on your iPhone or iPad.
