Similar to how smartphones adjust the display brightness depending on the lighting intensity of the environment, Windows 10 has a feature called Adaptive Brightness which works the same. It can be useful to learn to enable or disable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10, so keep reading to find out how.
Nevertheless, you should be aware Adaptive Brightness only works on devices that have an ambient light sensor. If the room where your computer is located is too bright, Adaptive Brightness will also increase the luminosity of its screen and the other way around.
How to enable or disable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10
It’s possible to quickly disable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10, and the same steps can also allow you to enable it. While this might not be the case for all computers running Windows 10, on our machine Adaptive Brightness was disabled by default.
Open Settings, and navigate to System -> Display. If you scroll down a bit, you will find an option called “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes”. If you want to disable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10, make sure the toggle located below this option is set to “On”. Otherwise, switch it off, assuming it wasn’t already.
You can also enable or disable Adaptive Brightness in Power Options. Here’s how:
Open the Run dialog. You can do that from the Start button’s right-click menu, or by using the Win+R shortcuts.
In the Run box type “powercfg.cpl” without quote marks and press OK.
Control Panel’s Power Options screen will open. Click on the “Change plan settings” option for your current power plan.
On the next screen click on “Change advanced power settings” to continue.
In the Advanced Power Options window navigate to Display -> Enable adaptive brightness.
Here you can enable/disable Adaptive Brighness while on battery and/or plugged in as needed.
While it’s super quick to enable or disable Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10 via the Settings app, the Advanced Power Options allows you to do this for each of the battery and plugged in modes, so it offers more control.
