How to find a router’s IP address in Windows 10
While this is common sense, it’s worth mentioning the first place you can check for your router’s IP address is on the router itself as well as its manual. If you’ve lost the manual and the IP address is not written on the router, there are still ways to get the IP.
Find your router’s IP address via IPConfig
If your PC is connected to the router whose IP you want to find, it can be done using the command line.
Click the Start button and perform a system search for cmd. Select the result called “Command Prompt”.
Type “ipconfig” without quotes in the command line and hit Enter. Shortly, a lot of information will be displayed. What interests us at the moment is the “Default Gateway” IP address which is written under or right next to it. That’s your router’s IP address.
Find your router’s IP address via Adapter Settings
Another simple way of checking your router’s IP address relies on the adapter settings. For this to work, you need to be connected to the router for which you’re trying to find the IP address.
In the taskbar, right-click on the Internet connection status symbol and select “Open Network and Sharing Center” (the option is called “Open Network & Internet Settings” in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and newer versions).
If you’re running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, this will open a Settings page. Select “Change adapter options”.
If you’re running an older version of Windows 10, the Network and Sharing Center will open instead. Either way, you need to double-click on your connection and select “Details” in the pop-up window.
Just like when using the command prompt, the default gateway is your router so in the Network Connection Details window, search for the IPv4 Default Gateway. The IP address next to it is your router’s IP address.
While this is not necessarily related to Windows 10, you could also use the old-fashioned way of finding your router’s IP address with the help of a search engine. You just need to search for your exact router model (that’s usually written on the back of the router) + IP address at the end of the search query.
All routers of the same model use the same local IP address and in most cases, someone else has already asked this question, or at least this information is available on the manufacturer’s official website.
Regardless which method you’ve used to find a router’s IP address in Windows 10, using it is a simple process. Open a web browser and enter the IP address in the address bar then hit Enter just like when accessing a regular website.
This will open the router’s configuration page although you might need to enter your login credentials. Once you log in, you can finally change your router’s settings.
