How To: Force check for app updates in the Store on Windows Phone

I have a few select apps, I heavily rely on…everyone does. And keeping them up to date is of great importance. Before Windows Phone 8.1, the system didn’t allow users to force check for app updates – which is a truly important feature might I say.

But now we can – just like we should have in the first place, and it’s really easy too. It can come in handy especially when you know one of your favorite apps is getting a major overhaul and you’re eager to get it a.s.a.p.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Launch the Store app.

Windows Store - App Bar

2. In the App bar located at the bottom of the screen, tap on Settings.

Windows Store - Settings

3. In the App Updates section tap on the “check for updates” option.

4. The phone will automatically check for updates of your installed apps. You’ll be notified on the Store Tile and if your notification settings allow it, in the Action Center too.

Bonus tip: Since you’re checking for updates you probably want to download and install them too – if there are any of course. To do that, go to the Store app one more time and tap on the small icon located at the top right corner of the screen showing the number of pending updates.

There you’ll see the list of apps that have new updates released and you can either batch download and install them using the “download all” option or tap on each one you want to update.
