If you’re a heavy WhatsApp user, then you probably have several group and private conversations which can be overwhelming at times. A simple trick that can help you easily distinguish the chat threads from one another (without even opening the app) is to customize notification sounds for WhatsApp groups and contacts.
Even if you’re not particularly experienced on tinkering with your iPhone and app settings, worry not, it’s extremely easy to change notification sounds in WhatsApp for specific groups and/or contacts.
However, you should know you can only use the built-in sounds, and you cannot use your own ringtones.
How to customize notification sounds for WhatsApp groups and contacts on iOS
In WhatsApp, tap on a conversation you’d like to customize the notification sound for. It doesn’t matter if it’s a private or a group chat.
In the conversation window, tap the group or contact name found at the top of the screen.
This will open a settings screen for the selected chat. In the list of options find and select ‘Custom Notifications‘.
Select ‘Message Sound‘ to continue.
Then, the list with available alert tones will be displayed and you can select a new one. Tap ‘Save‘ to apply the selection.
Easy, right? From now on, new messages received in that specific group or private chat will trigger the new sound alert you just set up, so you’ll know exactly the sender without having to unlock your iPhone or open WhatsApp.
