Night Light is a new Windows 10 feature that is similar to the f.lux app, the iOS Night Shift mode and other similar apps and features available in other operating systems. What these features do is they limit the amount of blue light emitted by modern displays which according to research can interfere with our sleeping patterns. In this guide, we’re going to talk about how you can enable Night Light in Windows 10, as well as customize it.
It appears the blue spectrum of light stimulates our brains into thinking it’s daytime, so staring at a blue-light emitting screen in the evening can negatively affect your sleep. For this reason, Microsoft added the Night Light feature in Windows 10. It’s both simple and efficient, and it works automatically according to your schedule.
Note: This feature is available in Windows 10 Creators Update currently available to those enrolled in the Windows Insider program. It is scheduled to become publicly available sometime this spring.
What Night Light does is it basically warms up the colors of the screen, which limits our exposure to blue light. This is particularly important after sunset since we wouldn’t normally be exposed to blue light from the environment.
How to enable Night Light in Windows 10
The easiest way to understand how Night Light works is to enable it and start tinkering with its options. Here’s how you can do that.
Open the Settings app and go to System -> Display.
Right under the Brightness slider, you will find the Night Light feature. It’s disabled by default so toggle the switch to the On position then click on the ‘Night light settings’ link.
The ‘Color temperature at night’ slider is how you adjust the warmth of your display’s colors while Night Light is enabled. Dragging the slider to the right will make the display cooler (if you drag it al the way to the right it will basically have the default color settings). To increase the color warmth you will need to drag the slider to the left.
If you want to see how the screen would look with a specific slider setting you just need to click and hold the mouse over the slider cursor.
Once you’re happy with the color settings, you can schedule Night Light. It’s possible to choose from an automated ‘Sunset to sunrise’ option or choose a custom time interval.
Even if you enable Night Light in Windows 10 and set it on a schedule, you can still use the option ‘Turn on now’ to enable it at any time you want.
How to quickly disable Night Light in Windows 10
You don’t need to open the Settings app if you need to quickly disable Night Light. Just click on the Action Center icon in the lower-right corner of the desktop to open the Action Center and you will find Night Light among the quick settings from where you can toggle it on and off as needed.
