The Pixel phone’s Camera app is said to be one of the best that are currently available. Fortunately at the moment it is possible to get the Google Pixel Camera app on other Android devices, no root required.
We can thank the perseverant XDA community as they managed to port the app so it supports 64-bit Android devices running Nougat 7.0. For now, the app is confirmed to work on Nexus 6P and 5X, but might also run well on other devices that fit the requirements.
How to get the Google Pixel Camera app on other Android devices
Besides the fact you don’t need a rooted device to get the Google Pixel Camera app, you should also know it doesn’t install on top of the stock camera app and you can uninstall it at any time.
As usual with ported apps, you will need to sideload the APK file (download link below) so you also need to have ‘Unknown sources’ enabled in your phone’s settings.
Download Google Pixel Camera (.APK)
Tap on the ‘Download Complete’ notification, then select “Install”.
With the Pixel Camera app installed, it’s time to start exploring some new features.
The grid view button is now available in the viewfinder and provides three types of grids. The Settings menu was slightly redesigned and is now mostly white.
You can long press anywhere in the viewfinder and the manual exposure slider to trigger the AE/AF lock which lets you reframe your shot while preserving the focus point. You can also use it to refocus without changing the existing exposure setting.
Nevertheless, there are still some things that need tweaking. At the moment you can’t record 4K videos with EIS enabled. Also, burst mode doesn’t with in the Pixel Camera app’s current version, meaning if you hold down the shutter button nothing will happen.
As a result, the new Google Camera app might not be suitable for your daily driver yet, but the new features still make it worth a try.
