The Fall Creators Update has brought back the ability to merge videos in Windows 10 without third-party tools, among other basic video editing options. This is great news since at the start of 2017, Windows Movie Maker was discontinued and new Windows 10 computers were left without stock video editing functions.
We can now merge videos in Windows 10 without third-party tools thanks to the new video editing options that were added to the Photos app, starting with Fall Creators Update. As you probably suspect, the Photos app isn’t just for photos anymore.
How to merge videos in Windows 10 without third-party tools
One of the newly added capabilities allows us to merge multiple videos into a single larger file. Before we proceed to the instructions, please check that your PC is running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (the version number must be 1709 or higher). You can see your current Windows version by typing winver in the Start menu and clicking on the result.
Open the Photos app, select the Create tab and click the “Create” button that’s right next to the Search field. Select “Video Project” from the drop-down menu.
Now you can navigate to your videos and select the clips you wish to combine into one single video. Click “Add” once you’re done.
Name your video and click the “Create video” button. We named it “Merged Video” for the purpose of this guide.
This will enable the editing mode. If you look at the preview on the left, you’re going to notice that by default, the Photos app only includes a short section of each clip you selected.

To adjust the length of the clip, click on the Trim button.
On the following screen, you can use the handlebars to select the part of the clip you want to include in the merged video. Click “Done” to save the selection. You can repeat this for each clip.
Optionally, you can reorder the clips using drag and drop. Also, if you want your videos to retain their original audio background, make sure that “No Themes” is selected in the Themes menu.
Once you’re happy with how everything looks, click the “Export or share” option.
The Photos app lets you choose between three different quality levels. Keep in mind the higher the quality, the longer it will take to export the video. Once you select the quality that fits your need, the merged video will be automatically saved to:
User\Pictures\Exported Videos\
As you can see, it’s quite easy to merge videos in Windows 10. There are no advanced editing options but the default functions work well and will suit most users’ needs.
