How To Install extensions in VLC Player

VLC Player is truly an amazing media player – it supports almost any media file format and packs an excellent set of features. And if there’s some kind of function it doesn’t include by default, there’s certainly an extension or a plugin for that.

For this particular reason, it’s worth learning how to install extensions in VLC Player. Besides a comprehensive official marketplace from where you can download extensions for VLC, you can also find some great ones on third-party websites.

How to install extensions in VLC Player

Depending on where you’re getting your extensions for VLC Player, the installation methods will differ.  Regardless if you’re trying to install an official VLC plugin, or you got it from another source, we’ll cover both situations below.

Installing extensions from VLC Player

If you want to install an official VLC extension, open the app and navigate to Tools -> Plugins and extensions.

If you’ve never opened this menu before, you probably won’t have anything listed there. Press the “Find more addons online” button to populate the list.

Then, you can filter the list based on the type of plugin you’re interested in. We selected “Extensions” for the purpose of this guide. Not all official VLC extensions are going to be displayed, in fact, the list is quite small.

However, if you see any extension that would be useful for you, select it and click Install.

Install a VLC extension from a LUA file

All VLC extensions have the .LUA file format so if you download an extension from an alternate source it will be a LUA file.

To install it, open the location shown below for your Windows user:

Then, you just need to copy the LUA file you just downloaded to this location and the extension will be installed.

You can see it in the Plugins and extensions window mentioned above, in the “Active Extensions” tab.

Note: If you don’t have a folder named lua, you will need to manually create it. You will also need to create a folder called extensions in the lua folder and then copy your extension there.

Delete extensions in VLC Player

While the method of installing an extension is not the same for the official addons as it it for those downloaded from third-party sources, deleting one is the same regardless where you got it from.

Navigate to the path shown below in your Windows user folder and delete the extension you want to uninstall:

Assuming your extension has a relevant name, you should be able to find it right away.

While VLC extensions can work in different ways, in most cases you can find them under the View or Tools menus. If you’re having trouble finding their options, check the developer’s description. It’s likely they’ve provided information on how you can use their extension.
