My Lockbox: Protect your folders

My Lockbox is a freeware application that you will let you lock and hide your folders so that you can protect yourself from malicious users, especially if you share your computer with other people.

Installation & Requirements

Although the setup is pretty simple and fast, you will have to be wary of the extra software that the installer will try to force on you. Simply uncheck the respective boxes when they appear on the screen and click on Next.  The supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 as well as Windows Servers 2003 and higher.

Interface

What should be noted from the beginning is that the free version of the application will only let you protect and hide a single folder. What the folder contains or what size it is matters not and you can have multiple subfolders if you want but only a single main folder that you can protect. Keeping that in mind, when you first start the application it will ask you for that folder. You can either drag and drop it inside that box or browse your computer for it. You can even create a new one on the spot that you can unlock and use later on.

When you lock a folder using the application it will disappear from its previous spot. It will still be there but the application will hide it and you will not be able to access it unless you unlock it from within the program first. To do that, simply go to the main interface and click on the Unlock button. The folder will appear and you can freely use it until you choose to lock it again. Moreover, you can easily access your locked folder by double clicking on the My Lockbox shortcut on your desktop. It is a very basic procedure that no one should have trouble using. The PRO version of the application will let you protect as many folders as you want but it obviously comes at a price.

Clicking on the Advanced button located beneath the Unlock icon will open the settings tab. There you can customize the application by using different skins, setting up a password, adding trusted utilities that you allow to access your protected folders and set up notifications for locking and unlocking your folder. Finally, you can customize the Hotkeys so that you can easily access the application’s features as well as opt in for a context menu addition that will make locking folders that much easier.

Pros

-Minimum resources required
-Simple and compact interface
-Extremely easy to use
-Decent customization options

Cons

-Limited to a single folder

Conclusion

My Lockbox is a very decent utility that marvels in its simplicity with a basic interface and easy protection features.. However, you will have to purchase the PRO version if you want to make the most out of it as the free edition simply acts as a trial of sorts.
