MYSQL Workbench: Powerful visual database design tool

Working with databases can be a real nightmare. If you don’t have the tools you need to make the operations smoother, you will have to waste a lot of time nitpicking the efficiency of everything. MySQL Workbench provides users with a neat package so that they can effortlessly manage all their database needs.

Installation & Requirements

The installation is very basic but quick. You simply select the folder in which you want the application to be installed and the way you want to proceed, either with a complete or a custom path. The custom path simply allows for the option to create a desktop shortcut for the program and that is it. After the installation is completed you can also choose to launch the application immediately. The operating systems are Windows 7 and 8 and both Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) are required for the application.

Interface

MySQL Workbench has one of the best looking interfaces out there, especially in its own field. Everything is neatly presented and even though a single window might contain a ridiculous amount of information, no piece gets in the way of another. Seeing the connections between the different entities is extremely easy and managing the database can be done a lot easier.

In the home tab, you can see the models you have created. You can choose whichever one you want and it will open in a different tab. You can also remove them or choose to open their folders. On the right of the screen you have all the shortcuts you would need for working around the program. That includes extra utilities, help files and various sites with the Workbench as their main subject where you can view all the information you could possibly need on how to operate it.

Opening a new model will let you edit in however you want. The processes are very fast and the interface provides a very clear way on how to interact with them. You can even take notes on each model so that you always remember what needs more work or tweaking. Moreover, you can load some preset models that you can edit to suit your needs or provide additional modeling additions by a handy toolbar on the right of the model screen.

Lastly, the top of the screen provides the users with a variety of options regarding their models and the databases they have to work with. Everything is interconnected and advanced users will find it extremely convenient to have all the features presented to them in such a sleek way.

Pros

-Amazing interface that is very pleasant on the eye
-An incredible amount of features available at the click of a button without them overflowing the beautiful design
-Fast workarounds and a fully editable interface will please even the most demanding users

Cons

-The overwhelming amount of features might deter newcomers that are not used to seeing so much information in one place

Conclusion

MySQL Workbench has been in the top of its field for a reason. If you are planning on managing a database, you really need this tool. Everything is customizable and the interface is the cleanest I have seen. It certainly gives its paid counterparts a run for their money.
