OpenVPN: Open source VPN

OpenVPN is a fully featured VPN application that will let you set up a connection at no time so that you will be able to surf the internet privately and without country specific restrictions. The program is completely free.

Installation & Requirements

OpenVPN can be used in conjunction with PrivateTunnel. The setup for both is extremely fast and should complete with no implications. Shortcuts will be automatically created and the program will run after the installation is over. The application supports Windows 2000 and later, Mac OS X 10.5 and higher, some Linux distributions, Android and jailbroken iOS. You will also need Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher in Windows.

Interface

OpenVPN has no actual interface. You will need to simply run the service and configure the files form the installation path using a normal text editor. The files that you need to alter can be found in the Start menu folder. Furthermore, you can use the Start menu to generate a static key for the VPN service. If you chose to install the GUI interface for the program, however, you will have more options.

Open the GUI through the desktop and you will see an icon in the system tray. Right click on it to get additional options. There you can easily configure the program’s settings without having to mess with the files too much. You can use the program’s proxy settings, choose the system ones or configure them manually. Depending on your settings you might also get even more options for your clients.

The PrivateTunnel is a lot more straightforward. First of all, you will need to create a new account. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to your account so be sure to choose an e-mail that you have easy access to. After that is done, you will be able to log in the service after choosing a network location. If you want to visit websites that are restricted in your country you might want to set the network to another country. However, this will be slower so if you do not want to sacrifice your speed you will need to choose a location close to you.

After you have logged in the application you will be able to see the remaining bandwidth limit for the day. Free versions of the program get around 100MB of data to use every day unless their referrals make a purchase. You can always purchase more data in various plans as well. In the bottom of the interface you will notice a number of default websites and a box where you can add your own sites. Clicking on any of them will simply open your browser to their page but you will be automatically connected to the VPN service.
