On a desktop computer, finding the Wi-Fi password of your current network as well as of networks you have connected to in the past is incredibly easy as the properties of each connection also holds the password. On Android, however, there is no obvious way for users to check out the passwords for their internet connections as Google has decided to make this information hidden. Well, tucked away out of plain sight may be a better description for how Android handles the information as anyone with root access can view Wi-Fi passwords, in more ways than one.
With any file explorer
Wi-Fi passwords are stored in a specific file which can be accessed with any file explorer.
- Open the file explorer of your choice.
- In the Root section, navigate to /data/misc/wifi/.
- Look for the “wpa+supplicant.conf” file and tap on it.
- This file contains all the Wi-Fi networks that you have ever been connected to. The “ssid” field is the name of the network while the password can be found in the “psk” or “password” fields.
With a dedicated app
There are quite a few apps that can find your Wi-Fi passwords and their only appeal is that they feature a prettier interface as the process is quite simple to complete manually as you can see. Furthermore, all of these apps require you to be rooted so the only reason why you may want to use them is so that you do not have to go through the file manager every time. Popular apps for this purpose include Wi-Fi Key Recovery and Wifi Password(ROOT). Both apps are quite trustworthy though there is certainly a risk involved with using third-party apps, as always.
