Windows 10 Creators Update is finally rolling out to the public along with its myriad new features. Among the smaller and mostly ignored improvements is the ability to set up the Power button to turn off the display in Windows 10.
Keep in mind that older versions of Windows 10 won’t allow you to reconfigure the Power button and the ability to set it to turn off the screen is only available in Creators Update and future versions.
How to set up the Power button to turn off the display in Windows 10
To access this new feature, you will need to open the Power Plan Settings. If you’re on a laptop simply right-click on the System Tray battery icon and select Power Options from the pop-up menu. If you’re using a desktop open the Control Panel and navigate to Hardware and Sound -> Power Options.
To continue, click on “Change plan settings” for your current power plan.
Scroll down to “Power buttons and lid” and click on the item to expand the list. Then, click on “Power button action”. Here, you can set the Power button action while plugged in and while on battery. You can configure them both, or just one of them….ultimately it’s your decision.
Click on one of these options and select “Turn off the display” from the list. That’s it! You have successfully set up the Power button to turn off the display in Windows 10.
As you can see, you can also configure the Sleep button (which can also be used to turn off the display) and what closing the lid does. It might be worth exploring this menu a bit further, perhaps you can find some other useful options worth customizing.
It’s also worth noting that the above-mentioned feature also works with a multi-monitor system. So, if you set up the Power button to turn off the screen and you have more than one monitor it will work for all of them.
To wake up the display, all you need to do is to move the mouse a bit or press a key on your keyboard. Keep in mind this option doesn’t lock the PC, so you won’t be prompted to enter a password.
