LAV Filter is a free, open-source collection of DirectShow filters that can replace most of the playback chain needed for playing present-day media.

The collection includes LAV Splitter which is a source filter/splitter needed to demux files into basic streams. LAV Audio and Video Decoder are also provided – these decoders offer both quality and performance.

These filters rely on libavcodec and libavformat libraries of ffmpeg project. They enable you to play almost any type of media format in DirectShow players.

Support is enabled for a large variety of containers such as AVI, MKV, MOV, MP4, OGG, MPEG-TS/PS, FLV…etc.; video codecs including DivX/Xvid, H264, MPEG-2, MJPEG, VP8 and others; audio codecs like AC3, AAC, MP3/MP2, DTS, TrueHD, LPCM and Vorbis; subtitles, specifically DVD Subs, SSA/ASS, VOB, text, SRT and PGS.

LAV Filter allows you to open BluRay playlists (.mpls format files) and the index.bdmv file.
