How To: Use extensions in iOS 10 Photos app

Capturing photo is a rewarding experience by itself, but editing them is also needed often, regardless if it’s just for fun, or to improve a photo. It is possible to use extensions in iOS 10 Photos app, which is a convenient way to alter and optimize images using some of the best third-party photo editing apps without having to open them.

Of course, you need to have at least one of these photo editing apps installed on your iOS device and there are plenty to choose from: Afterlight, Camera+, Pixlr, Effects Studio, Quick and many others.

Another important aspect is if you use extensions in iOS 10 Photos app to edit images, they provide non-destructive editing. As a result, you can easily go back to a previous state, remove or change the edits.

How to use extensions in iOS 10 Photos app

Assuming you already have some photo editing apps that are supported by the iOS stock Photos app, the first thing you need to do is enable the photo and video extension in the Photos app.

To do this, open the Photos app, tap on the photo or video you want to edit, then tap on the hamburger icon at the bottom of the screen.

Then, tap on the three-dots icon (the More button).

The Photo Editors screen should be displayed at this moment. Here, you can see a list of photo editors that can be used in the stock Photos app. The list depends on what third-party photo editing apps you have installed at the moment.

Enable the ones you would like to use then tap Done to save the changes. From then on you can use extensions in iOS 10 Photos app.

To use any of your installed photo editing extensions, open the Photos app and select a photo or video you would like to edit.

Just like before, tap on the hamburger icon at the bottom of the screen then tap again on the three-dots icon (More button).

You will now see a menu with all the enabled extensions. Simply tap on one to select it and you will be able to use that app’s editing features directly inside the Photos app.

As usual, tap on Done once you’re happy with how the edited image looks.
